Obituary

Trumpets sounded and there was great joy and celebration when Mark Ann “Marky” Hodgson Barrett entered the gates of Heaven on Monday, March 1, 2021.

Marky was born on October 7, 1940 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Madge and Mark Hodgson. The family was completed later with the arrival of her brother, Randy. Marky’s father was a teacher and coach, and she used to joke that “some people grow up on the edge of a golf course, well Randy and I grew up on the edge of the football field.” Her knowledge of football fell just short of Vince Lombardi’s, and she loved watching and listening to her beloved Oklahoma State Cowboys play.

As is the life of a coach’s family, Marky moved and lived in many places in Oklahoma, but Shattuck became a special place upon the death of her mother when the town supported them through their loss when she was barely a teenager. Marky talked about this time, teaching her children and grandchildren the importance of trusting the Lord in times of grief, turmoil and struggle, never swaying in her steadfast belief that He holds us in His arms at all times.

Marky graduated from Ponca City High School and then Oklahoma State University with a bachelor’s degree in Family Relations and Child Development through the Education Department. Everyone who knew Marky enjoyed her superb culinary skills. She delighted in cooking and served the Lord countless times by feeding crowds of people. Marky loved creating her family’s favorite meals, and we all cherish the memories of sitting around her dining table where the conversation was always as good as the food.

Although Marky attended the same high school as Jim Barrett, it wasn’t until they were both at OSU that they met on the steps of the student union building, talking for the first time. Jim says that it was after only one date, he fell in love, and knew she was the one for him. There began one of history’s best love stories as the two married during their spring break on March 25, 1961. Marky loved to reminisce about this time in their lives together when they were young and surrounded by friends who were also young and starting their careers and families. She and Jim made treasured friends who still remain close.

After graduation from OSU, Marky embarked on her teaching career, first in Stillwater and then in Anderson, Indiana, when she and Jim moved while he was completing his master’s degree. She was, as Jim likes to say, a teacher through and through. It just came naturally to her, as she was a nurturer first and foremost. Marky had the special gift of teaching Kindergarten, and provided the educational foundation for innumerable students. She had a huge impact on Sherman and Grayson County when she was an integral player in getting Texoma Christian School accredited. She was known for and laughed about her ability to assist the kids who were loosing their teeth,
making many a tooth fairy a bit poorer.

In addition, she always supported her children and grandchildren’s endeavors and went to bat for them when possible. We all relied on her guidance and encouragement. She and Jim put many a mile on their vehicles traveling extensively so that their children could compete in a brand new AAU swimming program that they and some other parents started in Grayson County in the mid 1970’s. It was Marky that went to the Sherman school board to gain permission for swimming to become a recognized sport at Sherman High School.

Legacies that Marky leaves behind for her children and grandchildren are her strength of character, her love for others and her desire to make the world a better place. Philanthropy came naturally for Marky, and she held leadership positions in numerous organizations including her college sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, the Sherman Service League, the Sherman Noon Chapter of Lion’s Club International and P.E.O. International Sherman Chapter FI. Marky truly served the Lord by serving others, and the lives of so many are better because of her caring and giving spirit. She taught her family to think of others first, knowing that will bring great blessings.

Church and church family were extremely important to Marky. She and Jim provided a strong Christian foundation for their children and grandchildren where church and faith in God is an ever-present force. Marky was treasured by many friends at Post Oak Fellowship where she and Jim are members, and we know she is smiling down, knowing that they will give all of their love and support to Jim now.

Marky is survived by her brother Randy Hodgson and her sister-in-law Susie Hodgson, her husband, James Joseph Barrett, her children, Tracy Barrett Curry, Sheri Barrett Fallon, Mark Barrett and Brian Barrett, her two sons-in- law, Jimmy Curry and Jim Fallon, her daughter-in-law, Joy Barrett, and her precious grandchildren, Rachel Curry Gibert and her husband Nick Gibert, Barrett Fallon, MJ Barrett and his fiancée Nicolette Carver, Mattingly Fallon, Jordan Curry, Emily Barrett and her fiance’ Nic Lugo and Riley Barrett, her cousins Leslee Randel Taylor and Steve Taylor.

A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Post Oak Fellowship, 2100 N Woods Street, Sherman, Texas 75092. It was Marky’s hope that everyone attending would wear bright, Easter colors and not black. The family respectfully requests that everyone attending in person wear masks or view by livestream through https://postoakfellowship.com. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the P.E.O. project, Educational Loan Fund at https://donations.peointernational.org/peo-donation-elf.
